What types of health insurance are available? There are primarily two types of health insurance: Fee-for-Service and Managed Care. While these health insurance plans have distinct features, they both provide coverage for a variety of medical, surgical, and hospital expenses. Most plans also include prescription drug coverage, and some may even offer dental benefits.

Fee-for-Service: These health insurance plans typically operate on a system where medical professionals receive a fee for each service rendered to the patient. Patients have the freedom to choose their preferred doctor, and claims can be submitted either by the medical provider or the patient themselves.

Managed Care: Over half of all Americans are enrolled in some form of managed care health insurance plan. These plans can include health maintenance organizations (HMOs), preferred provider organizations (PPOs), and point-of-service (POS) plans, each functioning differently. Managed care plans aim to provide comprehensive health services to their members and often include financial incentives for patients who utilize the network of providers included in the plan.
